It was announced today that Mitchell Racing and Mugen powertrains have renewed their partnership for another season.
The rules limiting the amount of teams an engine manufacturer can supply have been called into question by the team’s head of engine development Professor Fabian Lammable who spoke with assembled press during the announcement.
“I feel the Mugen remained the most reliable on the grid but we seemed to have not pushed the ERS factor as other manufacturers, perhaps ‘thinking too much’ about our customers especially given the little credits we receive back” Lammable said.
“For next year we are providing even more ERS to our customer(s) and my new assistant Dr. Ahto Miyko is introducing a new development strategy to return to prominence – Yuletide Optoelectronics Lap Overlap, YOLO for short – where our customers will continue to benefit of our power plant, but so will our team” FF1M.com assumes from the name that the team’s Christmas bonuses will be attached to their performance.
The Mugen and Gojira hierarchy have been noted opponents of a rules clarification which stated that the lead team would be counted, regardless of whether they were Customer or Manufacturer, in deciding how many customers an engine manufacturer could supply.
When contacted for a response to these comments an AFIA spokesperson said “One of the purposes of the engine manufacturer rules is to allow those teams who are behind in engine development additional funds to catch up with the leading manufacturers, we felt therefore that not counting a leading team who was fighting for the championship, just because they are a customer was unfair in that regard.”
“We introduced a budget cap this season in the hopes of curbing spending from the manufacturers as we felt this was unsustainable. However, the manufacturers continue to pour in their own money to reach the cap, at the cost of other areas of their team, and we therefore plan to make further changes to the engine manufacturer rules in future seasons to limit spending further”
