FF2M race winner Charles Leclerc will step up to FF1M with Tornado in 2018 it was announced today.
Some onlookers may feel that the move has come too soon for the Monegasque driver, as whilst he has shown speed on occasion, he has yet to consistent race results during his debut season in FF2M with the Medsign7 Racing team. He has however been a regular feature of Friday Practice sessions with Tornado this season and the team have clearly seen something they like in the youngster.
Tornado boss Tobias Wolff commented “Charles hasn’t set the world alight in FF2M so far this season. However, I have no doubt he has lots of future potential. He’s done a great job as test driver and has regularly had the pace over Esteban in the same car on the Fridays. Same as with Vaino. I’m convinced if I don’t snap him up now, somebody else definitely will. His name carries extra value for sure.”
The move will mean that once again Romain Grosjean will make way in the team, despite contributing three victories to the team already this season. “Many seats are still to play for” too.” Wolff commented. “I wish Romain all the best for wherever he ends up in 2018. He’s been a great asset for us this season. He will still be given equal opportunity as Vaino to fight for this season’s drivers title. If I had the credits to spend, I’d have retained him too.”
