FF2M Asia 2013-14 Preview

Its always difficult to make predictions where it comes to FF2M. The field is always so close and with no team performance differential it is squarely on the drivers to deliver and we have seen countless times that the more experienced drivers rise to the top each season. There are notable exceptions to this of course, and thats usually the mark of a special driver who will go on to future success in FF1M.

Is there anyone in the field with that star quality? Not this time around I don’t think. I expect the field to be as close as ever and I don’t see anyone running away with the championship. But I’ve been wrong before and I will be again.

As stated above, experience is key, and so it comes as no surprise that the likes of Charles Pic, Antonio Felix da Costa, Marcus Ericsson and Alexander Rossi come into the season as paddock favorites. These are drivers that have all won the odd race here and there in previous seasons and all four have a shot at the title this time around. With Pic’s past experience with Spaniel meaning he has to considered favorite for the Drivers title with his new team, Gojira.

Jolyon Palmer is another name that could be added to the above list. He’s been given one last chance by STV Racing to show his undoubted talent and he needs to make the most of it. He spent last season on the pace of his team mate, eventual runner-up Giedo van der Garde, but got himself into too many avoidable incidents which cost him a lot of points. Dannil Kvyat and Stoffel Vandoorne will also both have everything to prove after disapointing debut seasons in FF2M. Kvyat in particular no longer has any excuses following his move to perrenial title chasers Spaniel.

Of the new drivers Red Bull backed Pierre Gasly and Mercedes protege Pascal Weirlein both enter FF2M with high reputations, whilst the likes of Artem Markelov and Naoki Yamamoto could spring a surprise or two.

As with any FF2M series, who comes out on top will be based on consistency and a good dose of luck. I expect to see many race winners this season and for the cream to rise to the top over these 7 rounds across the winter months.

The FF2M Asia championship begins this weekend at the Istanbul Park Circuit.
