After recent speculation had suggested Mitchell Racing may not have been on the 2015 grid, todays announcement from team boss Joey Mitchell has all but quashed those rumours. The team have today announced that their young Australian hotshot Cooper Lee will be racing for the FF1M team in 2015 and has therefore seemingly also confirmed the team’s stay on the grid for next year and beyond.
Their newly confirmed driver Cooper Lee is currently sitting in 2nd position in FF2M, racing for Mitchell’s junior subdivision, OLM Racing. Lee has had a very solid opening campaign so far after taking a pole position at the Portuguese GP at Estoril.
Much like their Somerset neighbours Tornado, Mitchell have opted to ‘promote from within’ by giving their young protege a full FF1M season to look forward to. It will be very intriguing to see how Lee will fare in Mitchell’s 2015 FF1M challenger.
There is still no word on whether Mitchell will retain either of their current drivers, Nico Hulkenberg or Jaime Alguersuari, for 2015, though, there has reportedly been growing tensions between team boss Joey Mitchell and the latter of his two drivers over some poor performances so far this season, despite the Spaniard scoring his first points in the last race at Montreal. Nevertheless it has been a disappointing season for the team currently sitting in 10th place in the constructors.
After all, Mitchell is a team that isn’t afraid to make bold decisions and swift changes to their squad. Alguersuari was previously replaced with Nick Heidfeld by the team following the 2012 British Grand Prix and now, with a certain Australian rookie waiting in the wings to make his FF1M debut, one may expect there to be further shake-ups knowing Mitchell’s reputation.
