Jaime Alguersuari took a dominant victory in the final race of the 2011 AF1RL Season but it was not enough to stop Jean-Eric Vergne from clinching the Drivers Championship.
Vergne, starting from third on the grid, simply had to stay out of trouble in the race, needing just one point to secure the title, but he started the race in attacking mood passing Race 1 winner Robert Wickens and then closing on rival Alguersuari before making his pit stop. Vergne was then able to post a series of fast laps to overtake the Spaniard when Alguersuari pitted a few laps later. Vergne’s lead was shortlived however as Alguersuari caught and passed the Frenchman on fresher tyres with Vergne wisely choosing not to contest the lead with the championship at stake, doing so again a few laps later in letting Wickens through and dropping to third.
