AFIA release draft 2017 calendar

The South African Grand Prix will return to FF1M in 2017 it was announced today.

The Kyalami circuit has hosted FF1M testing for the past two seasons with the AFIA using the tests to evaluate the circuit infrastructure. The South African race will replace the European Grand Prix on the calendar.

Three races are listed on the schedule as “To be confirmed”, the Portuguese, Bahrain and Macau Grands Prix. These races are all new events for the 2016 season and the AFIA is understood to be waiting to evaluate the inaugural running of the events before commiting to a continuation. It is also thought that one of either the Bahrain or Macau races could make way to reduce the schedule to an eighteen round campaign whilst should the Portimao circuit be unable to host the race the European Grand Prix at Nurburgring would be granted a reprieve.

The AFIA have also confirmed the testing schedule for 2017, with the traditional engine test for engine manufacturer teams to be followed by a single four day pre-season test for all teams with both taking place at Bahrain’s Sakhir circuit in February, whilst Mid-Season testing will return in August for three days at the newly renovated Zandvoort circuit.
