Sensation swept the paddock today in Spielberg as it emerged that the Pedersen and Mitchell teams have agreed a shock driver swap for the rest of the season with Sebastian Vettel replacing Cooper Lee at the Somerset team from the British Grand Prix onwards.
The move is sure to generate some discussion amongst rival team bosses with Vettel and Lee commanding sizably different pay-packet’s amidst a strict budget cap. Nevertheless, outgoing team owner Michael Pedersen, who is clearly done with the sport after a tricky start to the season and announcing the teams withdrawal at the end of the season, was willing to continue to pay Vettel’s salary for the remainder of the season in order to make the swap a reality.
The move was ratified by the AFIA last night after several days of consideration. German Vettel, a former driver’s champion, will surely boost Mitchell’s prospects in the Constructors Championship as they will now have two recognised front runners in the team in a season which has been marked by struggles for the outgoing Cooper Lee. The Australian will now partner Carlos Sainz at the Danish outfit for the rest of the season, and will undoubtably be hoping to catch the eye of another team owner for next season.
