Tyre Rules to change after mid-season test

Teams will be allowed free choice of tyre compounds in Friday practice from the German Grand Prix, the AFIA announced today.

Until now, teams had to choose which of the Hard, Medium and Soft compounds to use on each day of the race weekend. However, as this has limited tyre development in the first half of the season, the AFIA alongside the tyre manufacturers have decided to relax the rules. Now all three compounds can be chosen for Friday practice, and this will have no impact on the choices available for the rest of the weekend. Teams will then be able to choose between all three compounds for Saturday and Sunday, with the Medium and Soft tyres being limited to one day of running each as is the case currently. The Hard compound can be used on an unlimited basis.

Part of the reason for this change was due to the need for an extra qualifying session on Friday next season. The AFIA advised that further changes to the rules may be made next season, potentially returning to a system similar to previous seasons, where the Medium and Soft tyres could only be used at a limited amount of races through the season.
