FF2M AP : Season Preview

This weekend the FF2M Asia Pacific series begins at Dubai Autodrome, one of the most challenging circuits on the Arabian Peninsula. In this article we will take a look at the drivers who will be competing for the crown in Long Beach in a few short months.

The Returners

In any single seater feeder series experience can be key and therefore we often look to the “year-two” drivers for our favourites in any given season. For last season’s runner up Paul Di Resta it is now year three and this has to be his final shot at impressing the big boys in FF1M. This year he moves from OLM Racing to LiquiTarget who won the World Series by AF1RL last season with Jean-Eric Vergne in the same cars.

Meanwhile Dutchman Giedo van der Garde and Frenchman Charles Pic will face stern challenges from highly respected rookie team mates at STV Racing and Spaniel respectively. Other returning drivers include Fabio Leimer, who moves to newcomers Willows Junior, Davide Valsecchi with GRM, Jerome D’Ambrosio with Cramer and Alexander Rossi with Shake n Bake, who may all feel that this is their final opportunity to impress.

The Newcomers

For sure the highest profile newcomers to FF2M this term are Valtteri Bottas with Spaniel and Kevin Magnussen with STV Racing. Two drivers who come into FF2M with a lot of hype and two of the most successful teams in FF2M History to help them achieve their goals.

Less well known is Rio Haryanto, of Danish Racing, who has shown a lot of speed in testing and on his day he has the speed to compete with the top guys in the series. Likewise, António Félix da Costa will be expected to compete after bringing Red Bull backing to Willows.

The Verdict

Overall it looks like it’s going to be an extremely close season in FF2M and I will be very surprised if any one driver dominates. You’ve got to fancy Di Resta to win it, with Bottas running him close to the line. This weekend both races from Dubai will be live on Twitch so not long until we find out.
