Heidfeld claims shock victory at Long Beach

Nick Heidfeld won the Long Beach ePrix after pitting a lap later than early leader Nelson Piquet jr and emerging in front of the Brazilian.

Piquet had started from pole position but fell behind Renault e.Dams driver Heikki Kovalainen at the start. Piquet was able to reel in the Finn and passed him shortly before the drivers made their pit stop at the half way point of the race.

Heidfeld had started 6th on the grid and was running 3rd when Piquet pitted. Kovalainen was caught napping as the Brazilian entered the pits, slowing enough to allow Heidfeld to get alongside and pass into the first bend, taking the lead for the first time. Heidfeld then retained his lead as he emerged from the pits a lap later than Piquet and was able to build a small gap before the end.
